Sometimes, it's not your hard-earned exercise knowledge that makes you stand out in the crowd! I know that early on in my career, I didn’t really have any idea of how to market myself or my services. (Luckily for me, I worked at a small studio where the owner took care of that side of things while I honed my skills!)
When I did get out into a more competitive environment, a few really simple things helped me stand out from the pack:
- Admin skills. They’re so under-rated! Maintaining a diary (in pencil, and then on my iPhone) is so crucial for not double-booking yourself. Plus, the regular habit of simply texting my clients the day prior to their session to confirm meant I was never hit with a no-show. They appreciated the reminder and it helped build the relationship. It never looks good to your successful professional clients if you’re disorganised and unprofessional.
- Finding my niche. I was not going to get a lot of bodybuilding clients since I wasn’t a bodybuilder. I became known at my last gym as the holistic trainer, since I also taught Yoga and Pilates and encouraged my clients to rest and recover as well as train hard.
- Owning my personal fitness story. I had no idea that my personal experience with getting into the fitness industry would mean something to my clients. Sharing how fitness changed my life allowed me to connect with potential clients in a meaningful way, and guess what? No one else can be ME.
PT courses are good at equipping trainers with the physical skills needed to be a trainer, but I think they often fall down at the everyday business skills trainers will need! There are so many trainers who turn up late to sessions, don't have any type of session plan and fail to confirm sessions - don't be one of them!
